Growing guide & FAQs

When to sow winter vegetable seeds in Pakistan

The golden window in the plains — Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur — is mid-September to November, once daytime highs drop below about 35°C. Sow too early into hot soil and winter seeds simply rot. In Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, start two to three weeks earlier (late August onward) so plants are strong before December frost. In Karachi and coastal Sindh, wait until late September into October, because the sea keeps the soil warm longer.

What to grow this season

Direct-sow the desi staples straight into beds or deep pots: peas (matar), spinach (palak), fenugreek (methi), radish (mooli), turnip (shaljam), carrots (gajar), coriander (dhania), beetroot and lettuce. Raise cauliflower (phool gobhi), cabbage (band gobhi) and broccoli in nursery trays for October transplanting, and plant garlic (lehsan) cloves from late September. Beginners should start with methi, mooli and palak — all three sprout within a week and crop in under six.

Every packet in this collection is grown as a test tray before we pack it, the way our family has done since 1932. If it does not sprout for us, it does not ship to you. Planning the whole season? Winter vegetable seeds — frequently asked questions

When should I sow winter vegetables in Lahore?

Mid-September to the end of October is ideal. October is the single best month — the soil has cooled, three months of good growing weather lie ahead, and peas in particular prefer it. If you miss the window, fast greens like palak, methi and mooli can still be sown into late November.

Which winter vegetables are easiest for beginners?

Methi (fenugreek) is the easiest crop on this list — scatter, rake in, water, and you are cutting greens in three to four weeks. Mooli (radish) is ready in 30 to 40 days, and palak (spinach) can be cut repeatedly all winter from one sowing.

Can I grow winter vegetables in pots on a rooftop?

Yes. Use a 12-inch pot minimum for greens and 16-inch or grow bags for carrots and cauliflower, and fill with a light mix — half garden soil, a quarter rotted gobar khaad, a quarter coco peat. Rooftops also escape the worst frost pockets, so lettuce often lasts longer up there.

Do winter vegetables survive frost in Pakistan?

Most improve after it. Peas, carrots, radish, turnip, spinach, methi, cauliflower, cabbage and garlic all tolerate frost, and cold actually sweetens root crops by turning starch to sugar. Only tender summer crops like tomato and chilli are killed by a hard frost.

Why did my winter seeds not germinate?

Nine times out of ten it is the sowing month, the depth or the watering — not the seed. Our guide to why seeds fail to germinate in Pakistan covers the ten usual causes. Every packet we sell is germination-tested, and if yours fails within 60 days we will replace it free.
