Coriander (Dhania) Seeds

Grow fragrant, cutting-fresh dhania with these Coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum). The herb no Pakistani kitchen can run without, for chutney, raita and garnishing everything, sown in waves through the cool months so the bunch is always fresh.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Sowing time: September to November in the plains, and again in February; October to December in Karachi; September to October in Islamabad. Heat makes dhania bolt to seed, cool weather keeps it leafy.
• Method: Rub the round husks between your palms to split them into half-seeds, soak overnight, then sow 1 cm deep, direct where it will grow.
• Germination: 10–20 days at 15–22°C; slow is normal for dhania, do not resow in panic at day ten.
• Spacing: Broadcast thickly for cutting; resow a fresh patch every two to three weeks.
• Harvest: From 4–6 weeks, cutting whole young plants or outer leaves.
• Sun and water: Full winter sun; light, steady moisture.
