When to sow summer flower seeds in Pakistan

Sow from February through April in the plains for flowering from April onward, and again in July and August for an autumn display. Marigold (gainda) is the exception and the most useful flower in a Pakistani garden — it can be sown almost year-round, and a September sowing gives blooms in time for December weddings.

What to grow

The reliable performers are marigold (gainda), zinnia, sunflower, cosmos, vinca (sadabahar), portulaca (moss rose), celosia, gomphrena, balsam and amaranthus. Vinca and portulaca are the most heat-and-drought-tolerant of the lot and thrive in pots on a west-facing balcony where little else survives. Zinnia and cosmos are the best cut flowers, and marigold does double duty — many Pakistani gardeners plant it along vegetable beds to deter pests.

Which flowers survive Pakistani summer heat?

Vinca (sadabahar), portulaca, zinnia, marigold, cosmos and celosia all handle 40°C and above. Vinca and portulaca are the toughest — they flower in full sun with minimal water and are ideal for rooftops and balconies.

When should I sow marigold in Pakistan?

Marigold is the most flexible flower we sell. February to March gives spring flowers, June to July gives monsoon colour, and September to October gives blooms for the December wedding season. Allow roughly 45 to 60 days from sowing to first flower.

How often should I water summer flowers?

Water deeply in the early morning or evening, never in the midday sun. Pots may need it twice a day in June; beds do better with one thorough soaking than several light sprinklings. Mulch the surface to halve how quickly it dries.

Can I sow flower seeds during the monsoon?

Yes, but drainage decides everything. July and August sowings do well in raised beds and pots that drain freely, while flat ground waterlogs and rots the seedlings. Water in the morning only and give trays airflow to avoid damping-off.

Which summer flowers are best for cutting?

Zinnia, cosmos, sunflower and celosia all last well in a vase. Cut in the early morning, and keep picking — the more you cut, the more each plant flowers.
