What you need to start a garden in Pakistan

For a first kitchen garden, four things cover almost everything: a khurpa (hand trowel) for planting and transplanting, a hand fork or weeder for breaking Pakistan's hard clay-silt crust, a pruning shear for harvesting and tidying, and a watering can with a fine rose — a fine rose matters more than most people expect, because a running hose washes small seeds out of the soil and is the reason many sowings fail.

Add seedling trays if you are raising cauliflower, cabbage or winter flowers for transplanting, and grow bags or large pots if you garden on a rooftop or balcony. For greens, a 12-inch pot is the practical minimum; for tomatoes, gourds and carrots use 16-inch or grow bags, since small pots cook in summer and dry out within an afternoon.
