When to sow herb seeds in Pakistan

Most imported herbs prefer Pakistan's cool season. Sow dill (soya), parsley, celery, chives, coriander, oregano, thyme and sage from mid-September through November, and again in February. Basil is the exception — it is a warm-season herb, so sow it from February to April and it will run right through summer. In Islamabad and the north, start autumn sowings two to three weeks earlier; in Karachi, two to three weeks later.

What to grow

Our collection covers the kitchen essentials: basil (sweet and Genovese types), parsley (flat and curled), thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary, dill, chives, celery and coriander (dhania). Mint is best grown from runners rather than seed. Slow starters like parsley and rosemary can take two to three weeks to appear — that is normal, not failure.

Herb seeds — frequently asked questions

Which herbs grow best in Pakistan?

Coriander, mint, basil, parsley and dill are the most reliable. Coriander and dill suit the cool season, basil the warm one, and mint grows almost anywhere with regular water and part shade.

Can I grow herbs indoors or on a balcony?

Yes — herbs are the best crop for small spaces. A 6 to 8-inch pot per herb with four to six hours of sun is enough. Kitchen windowsills work well for basil, chives and parsley through winter.

Why does my coriander bolt so quickly?

Heat. Dhania runs to seed the moment temperatures climb, which is why February sowings bolt by April. Sow from October to January for the longest leaf harvest, crush the round seed husks in half and soak overnight before sowing, and cut regularly to delay flowering.

How long do herb seeds take to germinate?

Basil and dill sprout in five to ten days, coriander in ten to twenty, and parsley, celery and rosemary can take three weeks. Give the slow ones a full three weeks before re-sowing — most people give up too early.

Do imported herb seeds actually grow in Pakistan?

They do, provided you sow them by Pakistani months rather than the months printed on an imported packet. The variety matters far less than the calendar — and every packet we sell carries Pakistan-specific sowing months.
