Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: October to December in the plains. Peas are a cool-season crop and they flower and set pods only while the nights are cold — sown late, they are a waste of a bed.
- Sowing: Sow direct 3 cm deep, seeds 5 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart. Do not soak the seed; it rots.
- Support: Even a short pea crops far better with something to climb. Twiggy branches, a net or a few lengths of string will do.
- Soil and feeding: Any decent soil that drains. Peas fix their own nitrogen — skip the urea or you will get a wall of leaf and very few pods.
- Water: Steady from flowering onwards. That is the stage that decides the crop.
- Harvest: Pick every two or three days. The more you pick, the longer the plant keeps setting; leave pods to fatten and it stops.
