Grow your own Thai basil — purple stems, narrow leaves and a clear anise-liquorice note that ordinary basil does not have. It holds its flavour under heat, which is why it goes into a curry or a stir-fry at the end rather than the start, and it takes a Lahore summer better than sweet basil does.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to April, and again in August to September, in the plains. Basil hates cold — it will not germinate below about 18 °C and a cold night will check it badly.
- Sowing: Sow 5 mm deep in trays or straight into a pot. It germinates in five to ten days in warm weather.
- Position: Full sun in spring and autumn; in the peak of May and June, give it some afternoon shade in Lahore or Multan.
- Water: Regular, at the root, in the morning. Wet leaves overnight invite fungal spotting.
- Pinching: The one thing that matters. Pinch out the growing tip above a pair of leaves as soon as the plant has four or five pairs, and keep pinching. An unpinched basil is a thin stem with a flower on top.
- Harvest: Take whole sprigs rather than single leaves, and remove flower buds the moment they appear — once it flowers, the leaf turns bitter.

Yes — basil is happiest in a pot. Allow about 6 inches (15 cm) per plant, give it morning sun, and pinch it often.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
