Grow your own red Brandywine — the heirloom beefsteak that people grow for flavour rather than for yield. Large, slightly ribbed fruit with dense flesh and the rich, old-fashioned tomato taste that supermarket varieties lost somewhere along the way. Expect fewer fruits and better ones.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: September to November in nursery trays for a main winter crop, transplanting at four to five weeks. A second sowing in January gives a spring crop. Hill areas sow March to May.
- Sowing: Sow 5 mm deep in trays, keep warm and bright, and transplant deep — tomatoes root from the buried stem and come up sturdier for it.
- Spacing and support: 45–60 cm apart, staked or caged from the day you plant. A big-fruited variety on the ground is a variety you will lose to rot and insects.
- Soil and feeding: Rich, well-drained ground. Feed with potash once the first truss sets; heavy nitrogen gives leaf instead of fruit.
- Water: Deep and even at the root. Erratic watering is what splits the fruit and causes blossom-end rot.
- Harvest: Pick as the colour comes. In the heat of April, picking at the breaker stage and finishing them indoors saves the crop from splitting on the plant.
