Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: Any month of the year indoors, and October to March outdoors in the plains. Cress is quick and undemanding — sow a pinch every week rather than the whole packet at once.
- As a microgreen: Scatter thickly on damp compost, or on wet cotton wool in a tray, and barely cover. It germinates in two days and is ready to cut with scissors in seven to ten.
- In the ground: Sow direct 5 mm deep in shallow drills 15 cm apart and thin to 10 cm, for larger plants and a longer picking.
- Light and water: Bright light but not fierce afternoon sun, and compost that never dries out. Cress turns bitter and runs to seed the moment it goes thirsty.
- Harvest: Cut just above the soil. A tray will usually give one good cut and a smaller second.
- Succession: Start a new tray the day you cut the last one and you will never be without it.
Frequently asked questions
Will this grow in a pot?
Yes — a tray is actually better than a bed. Any shallow container 5 cm deep, or even a saucer of damp tissue, will grow you a cut of cress.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
