Grow your own cos lettuce — Parris Island is the standard green romaine, upright heads of long crisp leaves with a firm white midrib. This is the lettuce a Caesar salad is built on, and it stands the heat better than any butterhead.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: September to February in the plains, in succession. Lettuce is a cool-season crop — above about 27 °C it turns bitter and bolts, so the winter months are its window here.
- Sowing: Sow 5 mm deep, barely covered; the seed needs some light. Thin or transplant to 25–30 cm apart for hearting types, 15 cm for loose leaf.
- Soil and water: Rich, moisture-holding soil and steady water. Lettuce is mostly water, and it tastes of whatever stress you put it under.
- Position: Full sun in December and January, light afternoon shade by March.
- Harvest: Cut a whole head at the base, or pick outer leaves from the loose-leaf types and let the centre carry on for weeks.
- Succession: Sow a short row every two weeks. A single sowing gives you a glut and then nothing.

Yes. A trough 20 cm deep is ideal, and a pot is easier to shade in March when the weather turns.
