Grow your own buttercup squash — squat, dark green, turban-shaped fruits with deep orange flesh that is sweeter and drier than pumpkin, closer to a roasted chestnut. It keeps for months in a cool store room, which makes it one of the few vegetables you can grow in autumn and still be eating in spring.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to March in the plains so the fruit matures before the monsoon, or July to August for a winter harvest. It needs a long, frost-free run of about a hundred days.
- Sowing: Sow direct on low mounds, three seeds per station 2.5 cm deep, stations 1.2 m apart. These vines run a long way — give them a corner, a boundary or a rooftop edge.
- Soil and feeding: Rich ground with plenty of well-rotted manure at the station, then a potash feed once the fruit sets.
- Water: Steady while the vines run and the fruit swells, then ease off as the skin hardens.
- Ripening: Leave the fruit on the vine until the skin is hard enough that a thumbnail will not mark it, and the stalk has gone corky.
- Curing and storage: Cut with a few centimetres of stalk, leave it in the sun for a week to cure, then store somewhere cool and dry. Cured properly it will keep for months and the flavour deepens.

Will this grow in a pot?
Not really worth it. Winter squash runs metres of vine to ripen one or two fruits, and it needs open ground to do that.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
