Grow your own sweet onions — Walla Walla is the famously mild American onion, sweet enough to eat raw in slices. An honest word: it is a long-day variety, so it will not bulb properly in the Lahore plains. Grow it in the north, or sow it here and pull it young as an unusually large, sweet spring onion.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: October to November in the plains, in a nursery bed, transplanting the seedlings out in December and January. This is the standard Punjab rabi timing and it is what the crop wants.
- Sowing: Sow 1 cm deep in a fine seedbed. Transplant when the seedlings are pencil-thick, trimming the tops back by a third so they stand up.
- Spacing: 10 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart for bulbs, closer for spring onions.
- Day length matters: Bulbing is triggered by the length of the day, not by the calendar. Short-day and intermediate types bulb properly in the Pakistani plains; long-day American varieties often will not, and are better grown in the north or pulled young as large spring onions.
- Water and feeding: Steady water while the bulbs swell, then stop watering once the tops start to fall over. Nitrogen early, potash late.
- Harvest and curing: Lift when the tops bend over and yellow. Dry the bulbs in the shade for a week or two before storing — a properly cured onion keeps for months.
Frequently asked questions
Will this grow in a pot?
Yes for spring onions and bunching types — a 20 cm trough is plenty. Full-sized bulbs want open ground and more room than a pot gives.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
