Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: Mid-February to March in the Punjab plains, and again in late July to August for an autumn crop. Karachi and the coastal belt can sow from October through February. Hill stations sow April to May.
- Sowing: Sow direct where the plants are to grow — cucumbers resent root disturbance. Two or three seeds per station, 2 cm deep, thinned to the strongest seedling, with stations 45 cm apart along a ridge.
- Soil and water: Loose, well-manured soil on a raised ridge with the furrow alongside for water. Irrigate the furrow, not the leaves — wet foliage in Lahore humidity invites powdery mildew.
- Training: Run the vines up a net or a bamboo frame. Fruit hanging clear of the ground stays straight, stays clean and escapes most fruit-fly damage.
- Feeding: Well-rotted gobar worked in at sowing, then a potash-rich feed once the first fruits set.
- Harvest: Pick young and pick often. Every fruit left to swell on the vine tells the plant to stop producing.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 14 inches (35 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, and give it a net or trellis to climb. A sunny balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
