Grow your own yellow watermelon — icebox-sized fruits of 2–3 kg with bright yellow flesh and a honeyed flavour quite unlike the red kind. Small enough to fit in a fridge, quick enough at 65–80 days for a short season, and on vines that stay manageable in a home garden.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to March in the plains, so the fruit ripens in the dry heat of May and June. Sindh and the coastal belt can start in January. Do not sow so late that ripening falls in the monsoon — rain at ripening splits the fruit and washes out the flavour.
- Sowing: Sow direct on raised ridges or flat beds, three seeds per station 2.5 cm deep, stations 90 cm apart, thinned to the two strongest.
- Soil: Light, free-draining sandy loam suits melons best — the sandy river soils of the Punjab are ideal. Heavy clay holds water and rots the crown.
- Water: Water steadily while the vines run and the fruit swells, then ease off as ripening begins. Drier roots at the end concentrate the sugars.
- Keep it off the soil: Slip a tile, a brick or a handful of straw under each fruit so it does not sit on damp ground.
- Harvest: Ripeness is told by smell and by the stem, not by size — the blossom end perfumes and the stalk cracks or slips when the fruit is ready.

Will this grow in a pot?
It can be done, but it asks a lot. Use the largest container you have — 18 inches (45 cm) or a half-drum — one plant only, in full sun, and expect fewer fruits than in open ground.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
