Why washed coco peat matters

Coconut husks are soaked and processed near the coast, so untreated coco peat carries sodium and potassium salts from seawater. In a mature plant you may never notice. In seed trays and cuttings you will: leaf tips brown, growth stalls, and germination drops for no visible reason. It is the single most common cause of cocopeat disappointing a first-time user.

This block is washed with fresh water before compression to flush those salts out. You can soak it and plant straight into it — no extra rinsing cycle, no guesswork.

Washed 3.5 kg vs our standard block

• This washed block (3.5 kg, ≈50 litres): for seed starting, cuttings, seedling trays, hydroponics and anything delicate. Costs a little more per litre; worth it where germination matters.
• Standard block (1 kg & 5 kg): the economical choice for bulk soil conditioning, raised beds and established plants, where a rinse before use is enough.

How to prepare the block

1. Place the block in a bucket or tub with room to expand — it roughly quadruples in bulk.
2. Add about 15 litres of water and leave it 30 minutes to an hour. Overnight does no harm.
3. Break the swollen peat apart with your hands or a trowel until no dry lumps remain.
4. Squeeze a handful. Damp like a wrung-out sponge is right; dripping means too much water.
5. Use it straight away, or store it damp in a covered container.

What to mix it with

Coco peat holds water and air but almost no nutrition, so it works as a base rather than a complete soil:

• Seed starting: 70% washed coco peat + 30% sieved compost.
• Cuttings and propagation: 50% coco peat + 50% coarse sand or perlite for sharp drainage.
• Potting mix: 40% coco peat + 40% compost or garden soil + 20% sand or perlite.

Begin feeding a balanced fertiliser once seedlings show their first true leaves.

How much does a 3.5 kg washed block make?
About 50 litres of expanded medium — enough for roughly 150–200 seedling cells, or 15–20 medium pots.

Do I still need to rinse it?
No. It has already been washed. A quick rinse does no harm if you prefer, but it is not necessary.

Is washed coco peat worth the extra cost?
For seeds, cuttings and hydroponics, yes — salt damage at the seedling stage is invisible until it is too late. For filling beds and conditioning soil, our standard block does the same job for less.

Can I reuse it?
Yes, two to three cycles. Break it up, pick out old roots, rinse and refresh with compost between crops.

Is coco peat pH neutral?
Coco peat sits close to neutral (around pH 5.8–6.8), which suits most vegetables, herbs and flowers without correction — unlike acidic peat moss.
