A speckled white ceramic pot standing on three sturdy legs, wrapped with a vintage London scene: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, a red double-decker bus, a postage stamp, lines of old handwritten script, and a tied bouquet of pink roses and lavender laid across a postcard. The glaze is flecked with fine brown speckles, which gives the whole piece the look of an old piece of studio pottery rather than something new.
A Pot with a Story on It
Most decorative pots repeat a pattern. This one tells you something: it reads as a postcard that somebody sent home. That makes it a far better gift than a plain pot, and it is the sort of thing people keep on a desk at work or on a kitchen windowsill where they will see it every day.
What to Plant in It
The decoration is detailed and the colours are soft, so keep the planting simple and let the pot speak. Plain green foliage works best: money plant, a small fern, baby rubber plant (peperomia), syngonium, or an African violet if you want flowers. Pink or purple blooms echo the roses and lavender in the picture, while strong yellows and oranges fight with them.
Why the Legs Help
The three legs lift the base clear of the surface, so air moves underneath and no water is trapped between pot and table. On a wooden desk or a polished shelf that is what stops a ring forming, and it raises the pot enough to give it presence beside taller objects.
Care
- Watering: Water into the soil, not over the rim, and the decorated surface stays clean. Let the top two to three centimetres of mix dry before watering again.
- Cleaning: Wipe with a soft damp cloth only. The scene is a surface decoration, so never scrub it, never use scouring powder, and keep it out of the dishwasher.
- Position: Indoors or on a sheltered verandah. Direct all-day summer sun will fade a printed decoration over time, so give it bright indirect light rather than a south-facing ledge.
