What vermicompost actually is

Vermicompost is organic matter that has been eaten and digested by earthworms and passed out as castings. It is not the same thing as ordinary compost. Going through a worm's gut breaks the material down far finer, coats it in beneficial microbes and enzymes, and leaves a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling material that plants take up easily.

Good vermicompost should smell like clean forest earth. If a bag of "vermicompost" smells sour or of ammonia, it is not finished and it will harm your plants rather than help them.

Why gardeners in Pakistan keep buying it

• It cannot burn. Nutrients are held in a slow-release organic form, so there is no safe upper limit the way there is with urea or NPK. You can use it on seedlings, on cuttings, on anything.
• It fixes soil structure. Heavy clay in Punjab loosens and drains better; sandy soil holds together and stops water running straight through.
• It holds moisture. Castings act like a sponge — in Lahore, Multan and Karachi summers this is the difference between watering once a day and twice.
• It brings soil back to life. Beneficial bacteria and fungi come with it, and those are what actually make nutrients available to roots.
• Micronutrients too — iron, zinc, manganese and more, the things a bag of straight NPK does not give you.

How to use it

1. New potting mix — blend at roughly 10–20% of the total volume with garden soil, coco peat and sand. Mix it right through, do not layer it.
2. Established pots — scratch a handful into the top inch of soil once a month through the growing season and water it in.
3. Vegetable and flower beds — spread a thin layer, about half an inch, over the bed and fork it into the top few inches before planting.
4. Lawns — sift a thin dusting over the grass after mowing and water it in. It disappears into the turf within a week.
5. Trees, roses and shrubs — a generous handful worked into the soil at the edge of the canopy, twice a season.
6. Seed trays — mix at about 10% with coco peat. Seedlings come up sturdier and transplant with less shock.

How far 5 kg goes

Mixed at 10–20%, a 5 kg bag makes up roughly 30–50 litres of potting mix — enough for a good number of medium pots. As a top dressing on beds it covers around 4–5 square metres. For most home gardens this is a season's supply.

Honest limits — read this before you buy

• It is not a high-strength fertilizer. Vermicompost is a soil conditioner with gentle, balanced nutrition. A heavy-feeding tomato or rose in full flower still wants a proper feed alongside it — pair it with bonemeal for roots and blooms, or a balanced NPK for leaf growth.
• It is a slow builder. The soil improvement is cumulative and real, but you will notice it over a season, not over a weekend.
• Store it in the shade. Keep the bag closed and out of direct sun. Baked dry, it loses the microbes that make it worth using.
• Do not use it neat. Pure castings in a pot pack down and hold too much water. It is an amendment, not a growing medium on its own.

Common questions

Vermicompost or ordinary compost?
Vermicompost is finer, more concentrated and more microbially active, so you need far less of it for the same effect. Ordinary compost is better value if you are filling a whole bed; vermicompost is better for pots and for feeding.

Can I use it on vegetables I will eat?
Yes. It is a single natural material with nothing added, and it is ideal for organic vegetable growing.

Will it bring worms or insects into my pots?
No. The castings are the finished product — the worms stay at the production end. Keeping the bag closed also keeps fungus gnats out.

Can I overdo it?
You cannot burn a plant with it, but more than about 30% of a potting mix makes the mix too dense and waterlogged. Stay in the 10–20% range.

Does it smell?
It smells of clean damp earth, and that is it. Nothing unpleasant, indoors or out.

This is a 5 kg bag, so it travels in the heavier courier band: Rs 750 anywhere in Pakistan, and free inside Lahore. Heavy parcels do not qualify for free nationwide delivery whatever the order value — the courier charges by weight and we pass on what we are charged.
