What is urea used for in a garden? Urea is the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertilizer available, at 46 per cent nitrogen, which is around four times the nitrogen in a typical general purpose garden feed. It is the fastest and cheapest way to green up pale leaves and drive leafy growth. What does it do? Nitrogen builds leaves, shoots and stems, and it is the nutrient behind deep green colour. Urea is the right choice for palak, methi, coriander, lettuce, cabbage, mint and lawns, and for pushing strong new growth on hedges and shrubs after cutting back. How much do I use? Considerably less than most people assume. For potted plants, dissolve 5 to 10 grams, about one to two teaspoons, in 4 to 5 litres of water and apply as a soil drench rather than sprinkling it dry on the surface. For beds, work 20 to 30 grams per square metre lightly into the top inch of soil, keep it off stems and leaves, and water in immediately. As a foliar spray use no more than 4 grams per litre, applied early morning or after sunset. Repeat every 3 to 4 weeks during active growth only. Why must it be watered in straight away? Urea left dry on the soil surface loses nitrogen to the air as ammonia gas, and that loss is much faster on the alkaline soils common across Punjab and in hot weather. Watering it in at once, or better still applying it already dissolved, puts the nitrogen where roots can reach it. What are the common mistakes? Over-application is the main one, and it shows as scorched brown leaf edges within a few days. Avoid urea on tomatoes, chillies and other fruiting plants once they are flowering, because it produces leaves at the expense of fruit; use a high potassium feed such as NPK 5-15-45 at that stage instead. Never apply to a dry or heat-stressed plant, and never in midday sun. Is a faint ammonia smell normal? Yes, for the first day or two after application while the urea converts to ammonium. A strong lasting smell means nitrogen is escaping, so water it in more thoroughly next time. Storage: urea draws moisture from the air and cakes into lumps. Keep the bag sealed in a dry place.
