A non-heading Chinese cabbage with pale, almost blonde ruffled leaves and a crisp white rib. Brassica rapa var. chinensis, certified organic seed, and startlingly quick — baby leaf in 18 days, full loose heads at 45. The flavour is buttery and faintly peppery, far milder than any cabbage, and the light colour lifts a bowl of darker leaves.

Growing Guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) late September to February; Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to January; Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December; Murree, Swat and Quetta February to April. Fast enough to sow every two to three weeks right through winter.
- Method: Sow 6 mm deep. Thickly for baby leaf; thinly if you want full heads.
- Germination: Two to fifteen days depending on soil warmth; fastest between 15°C and 24°C.
- Spacing: Rows 30–45 cm apart; thin full-size plants to 10–20 cm.
- Harvest: Baby leaf from 18 days; cut full loose heads at 45 days.
- Sun and water: Full sun to light shade, and never let it go dry — it grows fast and drinks steadily.
A cabbage that behaves like a lettuce
Tokyo Bekana does not form a hard ball. It makes an open, frilly rosette you can pick from leaf by leaf, which suits a small Pakistani kitchen garden far better than waiting three months for a cabbage head. Use it raw in salad, or wilt it in seconds at the end of a stir-fry.
