Burgundy tatsoi, and the colour is the whole point. Brassica rapa var. narinosa in a hybrid bred for deep red-purple, perfectly cupped, spoon-shaped leaves on an upright rosette. Baby leaf in 28 days, full heads at 45. The flavour is mild and the texture juicy and crisp — this is a salad leaf that earns its place on colour alone.

Growing Guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) late September to February; Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to January; Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December; Murree, Swat and Quetta February to April. Fast enough to sow every two to three weeks right through winter.
- Method: Sow 6 mm deep. For baby leaf, sow thickly in bands — three to five seeds per 2 cm.
- Germination: Around a week in warm soil; slower as nights cool.
- Spacing: Baby leaf: rows 5 cm apart, no thinning. Full heads: thin to 20–30 cm.
- Harvest: Baby leaf from 28 days, cutting 2 cm above the crown so it regrows. Full heads at 45 days.
- Sun and water: Full sun to light shade. Even moisture keeps the colour deep and the leaf tender.
Cut and come again
Sown thickly as a baby-leaf patch, Red Cloud will give you three or four cuttings from one sowing. Cut with scissors a couple of centimetres above the growing point, water, and the bed refills in about ten days. A single square metre keeps a household in salad for most of the winter.
Cold and heat tolerant
Rated by the breeder for both cold and heat, which in Pakistan means it starts earlier in autumn and keeps going later into spring than most salad leaves. The red deepens as nights get colder.
