Grow your own Bright Lights chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla). Glossy crinkled leaves on stems of crimson, gold, orange, pink and white — as ornamental as anything in a flower border and one of the most productive leaf crops you can grow in a Pakistani winter. Cooks like palak, holds like kale.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to November for the main crop, and again in February. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar August to October and February to March. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to August.
- Method: Direct-sow in the bed 10 mm deep, or start in trays and transplant. Both work; direct-sowing gives sturdier plants.
- Germination: 5–12 days at 15–24°C.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to 25–30 cm apart. Crowded plants give small leaves.
- Sun and water: Full sun to part shade with steady water. These are leaf crops — a nitrogen feed every three weeks keeps them producing.
- Harvest: about 60 days from sowing for full leaves, or from 30 days as baby leaf. Take the outer leaves and leave the centre; one plant keeps cropping for three to four months.
- One sowing, one season: Chard does not bolt the way spinach does. A short row sown in October will still be cutting in March.
- Use the stems: Slice the coloured stalks and cook them a few minutes before the leaves — they are the best part.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.

Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
