Grow your own Pumpkin on a Stick (Solanum aethiopicum), the ornamental ribbed eggplant that looks like a branch hung with miniature scarlet pumpkins. Grown for the stems rather than the plate — cut them, strip the leaves, and they dry to a brilliant lasting red that holds for months in a vase. Nobody else on your street will have one.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to October in nursery trays for the winter crop, and again January to February for the spring one. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar February to March. Murree, Swat and Quetta March to April.
- Method: Nursery trays, seed 10 mm deep. Like all its relatives it wants warmth to germinate.
- Germination: 8–14 days at 24–30°C.
- Transplanting: At 5–6 true leaves, 50–60 cm apart. Baingan makes a big bushy plant — do not crowd it.
- Sun and water: Full sun and rich soil with steady water. Stake the plant once fruit sets, or a loaded branch will snap. Watch for the shoot and fruit borer that troubles all brinjal in Pakistan — pick off and destroy any wilted shoot tips early.
- Harvest: about 80–90 days from transplant. Cut whole stems once the fruit turns from green to orange to deep red.
- Mainly ornamental: The small fruits are technically edible and are eaten in parts of Africa and Asia, but they are bitter. Grow this one for the arrangement, not the salan.
- Drying: Strip every leaf, hang the stems upside down in shade for two weeks, and they keep their colour all winter.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.

Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
