Poppy Seeds

Grow charming dwarf Iceland Poppies with Garden Gnome seeds (Papaver nudicaule). Papery bowls of orange, yellow, rose and white nod above neat 30 cm tufts, delicate-looking flowers that are surprisingly tough through a Pakistani winter.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Sowing time: October to November in the plains once soil cools; September to October in Islamabad; November in Karachi.
• Method: Best direct-sown, poppies resent transplanting. Mix the dust-fine seed with sand, scatter, and press in; do not cover, it needs light. From trays, transplant tiny with the root ball intact.
• Germination: 7–14 days at 16–18°C.
• Spacing: Thin to 15–20 cm.
• Flowering: February to April; pick just as buds crack open for the vase.
• Sun and water: Full sun; light watering, sharp drainage.
