Perlite Granules for Potting Mix & Drainage - 1.5 kg

What is perlite? Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass which, when heated to around 900 degrees Celsius, pops and expands into lightweight white granules a little like polystyrene. These granules are hard, porous and sterile. What does perlite do in soil? It creates permanent air pockets. Added to potting soil it improves drainage and aeration and stops the mix compacting into a solid block, which is the single most common cause of root rot in gamlas. Roots need oxygen as much as they need water, and perlite is what keeps oxygen available in a pot that is watered regularly. How much perlite should I add? For a general potting mix, 20 to 30 per cent of the total volume. For succulents, cacti and snake plants, go up to 40 to 50 per cent because those plants need the soil to dry out between waterings. For heavy clay in raised beds, work in a generous handful per square foot. For rooting cuttings, use perlite on its own or half and half with compost. Perlite or vermiculite, which do I need? Choose perlite when the problem is too much water: soil staying soggy, pots not draining, roots rotting, or a plant that prefers to dry out. Choose vermiculite when the problem is too little water: pots drying out too fast, or seeds needing steady moisture to germinate. Perlite drains, vermiculite holds. Many gardeners use both, in different mixes. Is perlite a fertilizer? No. Perlite carries no nutrients of its own, so continue feeding your plants as normal. Its pH is neutral to slightly acidic at 6.6 to 7.5, so it will not shift your soil chemistry. Why has the perlite risen to the top of my pot? Because it is very light, perlite naturally floats up over time with repeated watering. This is normal and does not affect how it works below the surface. Does perlite expire? No. It does not rot, mould or break down, and it can be rinsed and reused for years. Handling: the dry granules are dusty. Dampen lightly before mixing and avoid breathing the dust.
