Grow your own Chinese Giant sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), an heirloom bell dating to the 1900s and still one of the largest open-pollinated peppers you can grow. Fruit runs 10–12 cm across with walls thick enough to hold a filling — the pepper to grow if you want to make stuffed shimla mirch properly.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to October in nursery trays for the winter crop, and again January to February for a spring crop. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to November. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar February to March. Murree, Swat and Quetta March to April.
- Method: Nursery trays, seed just covered with 5 mm of mix. Peppers need more warmth than tomatoes to start.
- Germination: 8–16 days at 24–30°C. Slow and uneven below 20°C — be patient, the tray is usually fine.
- Transplanting: At 5–6 true leaves, 40–45 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. Unlike tomatoes, plant at the same depth they were in the tray.
- Sun and water: Full sun with steady moisture. Mulch the bed — peppers drop their flowers when the root zone dries out or the day goes above 35°C, so get them fruiting before the real heat arrives.
- Harvest: about 70–80 days from transplant. Cut with secateurs rather than pulling, or you will snap the brittle branches.
- Feed it: Big fruit needs a rich bed. Work in compost or old gobar before transplanting and feed again when the first fruit sets.
- Seed saving: Open-pollinated — dry seed from a fully red fruit and it will come true.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.

Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
