A mini pak choi bred to be harvested whole. Brassica rapa var. chinensis forms tight, uniform heads just 8–10 cm tall with fat white petioles and deep green leaves — one head is one portion, halved and grilled or dropped straight into a stir-fry. Ready in 30–35 days, which makes it one of the fastest vegetables you can grow in a Pakistani winter.

Growing Guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) late September to February; Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to January; Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December; Murree, Swat and Quetta February to April. Fast enough to sow every two to three weeks right through winter.
- Method: Sow 6 mm deep directly where it will grow, or in trays and transplant at the 3–4 leaf stage.
- Germination: 10–12 days. Happiest between 13°C and 21°C.
- Spacing: Rows 25–30 cm apart; thin plants to 10 cm since the heads stay small.
- Harvest: 30–35 days from sowing. Cut the whole head at soil level.
- Sun and water: Four to six hours of sun. Keep the soil evenly damp — a dry check makes pak choi bolt.
Why the mini size matters
Full-size pak choi needs a large bed and a sharp knife. Hotau was bred for small spaces: a 20 cm pot grows one perfect head, and a single grow bag on a Lahore balcony will give you a row of them. Everything is edible — leaf, stem, and the flowering shoots if a few run to seed.
Slow to bolt in warm weather
Most pak choi runs to flower the moment it gets warm. Hotau is bred for heat tolerance and holds its head together through the mild spells that interrupt a Pakistani winter, so you can keep sowing later into the season than with ordinary varieties.
