Grow your own Dwarf Blue Curled kale (Brassica oleracea). Tightly curled blue-green leaves on a compact plant barely 40 cm tall — the kale to grow if you have pots rather than beds. Sweetens noticeably after the first cold nights, and crops right through a Punjab winter.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to November for the main crop, and again in February. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar August to October and February to March. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to August.
- Method: Direct-sow in the bed 10 mm deep, or start in trays and transplant. Both work; direct-sowing gives sturdier plants.
- Germination: 5–12 days at 15–24°C.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to 25–30 cm apart. Crowded plants give small leaves.
- Sun and water: Full sun to part shade with steady water. These are leaf crops — a nitrogen feed every three weeks keeps them producing.
- Harvest: about 55 days from sowing, with baby leaf from 30 days. Take the outer leaves and leave the centre; one plant keeps cropping for three to four months.
- Cold makes it sweet: Kale picked in December and January tastes markedly better than the same plant in October. Leave it out in the cold.
- Compact: Stays under 40 cm, so a 12-inch pot on a rooftop is enough.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.

Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
