Grow your own White Lisbon (Allium fistulosum), the classic spring onion — long white shanks, crisp green tops and a clean mild bite. Because it never forms a bulb, day length does not matter here: it grows perfectly anywhere in Pakistan, and it is the fastest hara piyaz you can put in a pot.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) mid-October to mid-November in nursery beds for the main rabi crop; bunching types can go in any time from October to January. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar October to November. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to April.
- Method: Sow thinly in a raised nursery bed, 10 mm deep in rows 5 cm apart. Bunching types can also be direct-sown where they are to grow.
- Germination: 7–14 days at 15–25°C. Onion seed is short-lived — sow the packet the season you buy it.
- Transplanting: When seedlings are pencil-thick, about six to eight weeks in, lift and replant 10–15 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Trim the tops by a third and the roots slightly before planting.
- Sun and water: Full sun and steady water while the plants are growing. For bulbing onions, stop watering once the tops start to fall over — watering a ripening bulb is what causes it to rot in storage.
- Harvest: about 60–110 days depending on how thick you let the shanks get — pull the first ones at eight weeks
- No day-length problem: Unlike bulbing onions, bunching types are not sensitive to latitude. This one performs in Lahore, Karachi and Quetta alike.
- Succession: Sow a short row every three weeks from October to January and you will never buy hara piyaz again.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
