Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) mid-October to mid-November in nursery beds for the main rabi crop; bunching types can go in any time from October to January. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar October to November. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to April.
- Method: Sow thinly in a raised nursery bed, 10 mm deep in rows 5 cm apart. Bunching types can also be direct-sown where they are to grow.
- Germination: 7–14 days at 15–25°C. Onion seed is short-lived — sow the packet the season you buy it.
- Transplanting: When seedlings are pencil-thick, about six to eight weeks in, lift and replant 10–15 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Trim the tops by a third and the roots slightly before planting.
- Sun and water: Full sun and steady water while the plants are growing. For bulbing onions, stop watering once the tops start to fall over — watering a ripening bulb is what causes it to rot in storage.
- Harvest: about 115–120 days from transplant, lifted when the tops fall over and dry
- Read this before you sow: This is a long-to-intermediate day onion, bred for the longer summer days of the northern United States. In the Pakistani plains it may make a smaller bulb than the packet suggests. It performs best in the north — Islamabad, Swat, Quetta — and anywhere it can still be grown for excellent large spring onions.
- Curing: After lifting, dry the bulbs in shade for two weeks before storing, or they will not keep.

Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
