What neem cake is

When neem seed kernels are crushed for oil, what is left behind is a dry, brown, fibrous meal — neem cake, also called neem khali. It is a genuine dual-purpose input: a slow organic fertilizer carrying nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur, and at the same time a soil amendment that makes life difficult for the pests that live underground.

The pest-deterrent effect comes from the neem compounds that survive oil extraction. They are absorbed through the root system, which is why neem cake works on problems a foliar spray never reaches.

What it actually does

• Deters soil grubs and root-feeding larvae — the white curled grubs that chew roots and leave a plant wilting for no visible reason.
• Suppresses root-knot nematodes — the microscopic worms that cause knobbly, swollen roots and stunted, permanently thirsty-looking plants. Nematodes are one of the most common hidden causes of poor vegetable beds in Pakistan.
• Discourages termites and root mealybug in pots and beds.
• Feeds slowly and steadily — a gentle organic nitrogen source that will not scorch roots.
• Makes your other fertilizer last longer. Neem cake slows the conversion of nitrogen in the soil, so urea and ammonium feeds are not washed away as quickly. This is a real, measured effect and one of the reasons growers keep buying it.
• Builds soil life — organic matter, sulphur and a food source for beneficial microbes.

How to use it

1. Pots and containers — one to two tablespoons mixed thoroughly through the potting mix for an 8–10 inch pot. For an already-planted pot, scratch a tablespoon into the top inch of soil and water it in.
2. Vegetable and flower beds — roughly 100–200 g per square metre, forked into the top four to six inches of soil, then watered.
3. Roses, shrubs and fruit trees — a generous handful worked into the soil at the edge of the canopy, watered in well.
4. Give it two weeks before planting into a bed you have dosed heavily. Fresh neem cake is strong; letting it settle into moist soil for a fortnight lets the microbes start on it and takes the edge off.
5. Repeat every six to eight weeks through the growing season for ongoing protection, at a lighter rate than the first application.
6. Always water after applying. Dry neem cake sitting on dry soil does nothing at all.

Honest limits — read this before you buy

Neem cake is excellent at what it does and useless at what it does not do.

• It is not a knockdown spray. Aphids, whitefly and mealybug already sitting on your leaves will not fall off because you added neem cake to the soil. For those you need a neem oil or neem extract spray. Neem cake is the underground half of the job.
• It is slow. Expect to see the difference over weeks, not overnight. It prevents far better than it rescues.
• It smells. There is a strong garlicky, sulphurous smell when the bag is open and for a day or two after application. It fades. On a balcony, water it in well and it settles quickly.
• Do not pile it against stems. Mix it through the soil rather than heaping it around the base of a plant.

Common questions

Is neem cake safe for vegetables I am going to eat?
Yes. It is a plant-derived soil input with nothing synthetic added, and it is widely used in organic vegetable growing.

Will it harm earthworms or my soil?
No. It is not a broad-spectrum soil poison — it targets pest larvae and nematodes while adding organic matter that earthworms and beneficial microbes actually benefit from.

Can I use it with chemical fertilizer?
Yes, and it is a good pairing. Neem cake slows nitrogen loss, so your NPK feed goes further. Many growers use neem cake in the soil and a water-soluble NPK as the weekly feed.

Neem cake or neem oil spray — which do I need?
Different jobs. Neem cake for anything living in the soil: grubs, nematodes, termites, root mealybug. Neem oil spray for anything sitting on the leaves. Serious pest problems usually need both.

Is it safe around pets and children?
It is far safer than a synthetic soil insecticide, but it is still a garden input — store the bag closed and out of reach, and work it into the soil rather than leaving it loose on the surface.

How long does 1 kg last?
Roughly 20–30 pots, or five to ten square metres of bed depending on the rate you use. For a typical home garden a 1 kg pack covers a season with repeat applications.
