Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) late September to February; Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to January; Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December; Murree, Swat and Quetta February to April. Fast enough to sow every two to three weeks right through winter.
• Method: Sow 6 mm deep, three to five seeds per 2 cm for a dense baby-leaf patch.
• Germination: Two to fifteen days, from 4°C up to 24°C.
• Spacing: Baby leaf: rows 5 cm apart, no thinning. Full size: thin to 20–30 cm.
• Harvest: From 21 days, cutting above the growing point so it regrows. Full leaves at 37 days.
• Sun and water: Full sun. Even water keeps it mild; stress makes the heat aggressive.

Colour that deepens in the cold

Sown in October in the plains it will be red. Sown in the hills, or picked after a run of cold January nights, it goes almost burgundy. Cold is what brings the pigment out, so the coldest part of your winter gives the best-looking crop.

Slow to bolt

Rated cold tolerant and slow bolting, so it holds in the bed rather than shooting to flower the moment the weather shifts. Its sister variety, Golden Frills, carries the heat tolerance — grow both and you have the season covered from both ends.
