Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: October to January in the plains. Spinach is the most heat-sensitive of the winter greens — it bolts as soon as the days lengthen and warm, so sow early and sow often.
- Sowing: Sow direct 2 cm deep in rows 25 cm apart and thin to 10–15 cm. It dislikes being transplanted.
- Soil: Rich, well-manured, moisture-holding ground. Spinach is greedy for nitrogen and the leaf size shows it.
- Water: Regular and generous. A dry spell is the other thing that sends it to seed.
- Harvest: Pick the outer leaves from the time the plant has six or seven, and keep picking. One well-fed row will crop for six weeks.
- Bolting: Once a flower stalk rises the leaves turn bitter. Cut the whole plant then and sow again — it is quick.

Yes. A trough 20–25 cm deep, sown thinly, in a spot that gets winter sun but can be shaded by March.
