The showiest of the annual climbers — scarlet trumpets held clear of deeply cut, palm-shaped leaves, on a vine that climbs 2 to 3 m in a season. A cross between cypress vine and red morning glory, so you get the finer foliage of one and the bolder flower of the other. First flowers 50 to 60 days from sowing, then continuously through the heat.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to April in the plains, once nights hold above 15 °C, for flowers from late April. Sow again in July for a monsoon-to-October run. Hill areas sow April to June.
- Soak first: the seed coat is hard. Nick it lightly or soak overnight in warm water before sowing — skip this and germination is slow and uneven.
- Sowing: 6 mm deep, sown where it is to grow, 20 cm apart at the foot of the support. Sow in place if you can; it resents root disturbance.
- Support: trellis, wire, mesh, arch or fence, in position before the seedlings run. It twines fast and needs something to climb from the first week.
- Sun and soil: full sun, ordinary well-drained ground. Keep the feeding light — rich soil gives a wall of leaf and few flowers.
- Water: steady while it establishes, then sparingly. It handles Punjab summer better than most flowering climbers.
- After flowering: leave a few pods and it self-seeds for next year; clip them if you want to keep it in bounds.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Two or three plants in a 14-inch (35 cm) pot with a fan trellis or canes, in full sun.
How is it different from cypress vine?
Cardinal climber has broader, deeply lobed leaves and a larger scarlet trumpet; cypress vine has thread-fine foliage and small stars. Cardinal reads red from a distance — cypress vine reads as lace.
Does it bring in butterflies?
Yes, and sunbirds. The red trumpet is built for them.
