Grow your own Slobolt (Lactuca sativa), the heirloom bred to do exactly what its name says — hold on and stay sweet when other lettuces bolt and turn bitter. Frilly light-green leaves, and the one variety in this range worth sowing at the shoulders of the season when a Lahore afternoon is still warm.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) October to February — this is a winter crop here and will not stand the heat. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to January. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to November, and again in February. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to August.
- Method: Direct-sow in the bed or in a pot, seed barely covered with 3–5 mm of fine soil. Lettuce seed is tiny — do not bury it.
- Germination: 4–10 days at 15–20°C. Above 27°C the seed simply refuses, so sow in the evening, water in, and keep the bed shaded until the seedlings show.
- Thinning: Thin to 20–25 cm for full hearts, or leave 8–10 cm apart and cut as baby leaf. Eat the thinnings.
- Sun and water: Morning sun and afternoon shade suits it best in the plains. Never let the bed dry out — drought is what turns lettuce bitter and sends it to seed.
- Harvest: about 45–55 days from sowing, with cutting from around 28 days. Cut two centimetres above the crown and the same plant regrows for a second and third cutting.
- Why this one: Sow it in late September or in February, when heat would send ordinary lettuce straight to seed.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
