Grow your own salad mix in one sowing (Lactuca sativa). A blend of heirloom lettuces — green and red, frilled, oak-leaved and romaine — sown thickly and cut young as mixed baby leaf. This is the packet that replaces the plastic box of imported salad leaves.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) October to February — this is a winter crop here and will not stand the heat. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to January. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to November, and again in February. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta March to August.
- Method: Direct-sow in the bed or in a pot, seed barely covered with 3–5 mm of fine soil. Lettuce seed is tiny — do not bury it.
- Germination: 4–10 days at 15–20°C. Above 27°C the seed simply refuses, so sow in the evening, water in, and keep the bed shaded until the seedlings show.
- Thinning: Thin to 20–25 cm for full hearts, or leave 8–10 cm apart and cut as baby leaf. Eat the thinnings.
- Sun and water: Morning sun and afternoon shade suits it best in the plains. Never let the bed dry out — drought is what turns lettuce bitter and sends it to seed.
- Harvest: about 40–60 days for full plants, or from 25 days as baby leaf. Cut two centimetres above the crown and the same plant regrows for a second and third cutting.
- How to sow it: Broadcast thickly in a band 20 cm wide rather than in a thin row, and cut the whole band with scissors at 8–10 cm tall.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
