Grow your own lemongrass (Cymbopogon). Tall arching blue-green blades with a clean citrus scent — the stalks go into Thai and Vietnamese cooking, the leaves make an excellent caffeine-free chai, and a clump by the verandah keeps mosquitoes at a distance. It thrives in Pakistani heat, which is more than most herbs manage.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to November, and again February to March. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to February. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to October and February to April. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta April to June.
- Method: Trays or direct into the bed, seed barely covered with 3–5 mm of fine mix. Most herb seed is small — press it in rather than burying it.
- Germination: 10–21 days at 18–22°C. Herbs are slower off the mark than vegetables; keep the surface damp and do not give up on the tray in week two.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to 20–30 cm apart, or one plant to a 10-inch pot.
- Sun and water: Full sun to light afternoon shade. Let the top two centimetres dry between waterings — far more herbs are killed by soggy soil than by drought.
- Harvest: stalks thick enough to cut from about 75–90 days, and the clump gets better every year. Pinch the growing tips regularly: it keeps the plant bushy and stops it running to flower.
- Perennial here: Lemongrass survives a Lahore or Karachi winter easily. Cut it back hard in February and it comes away again. In Murree or Quetta, lift it into a pot for the cold months.
- How to harvest: Twist and pull an outer stalk at ground level rather than cutting the whole clump. It regrows from the centre.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
