Grow your own lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). A soft-leaved perennial mint relative that smells of lemon sherbet when you brush past it — the leaves make a calming caffeine-free tea, fresh or dried, and the plant comes back year after year once established.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) September to November, and again February to March. Karachi and coastal Sindh October to February. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to October and February to April. Murree, Swat, Abbottabad and Quetta April to June.
- Method: Trays or direct into the bed, seed barely covered with 3–5 mm of fine mix. Most herb seed is small — press it in rather than burying it.
- Germination: 10–21 days at 18–22°C. Herbs are slower off the mark than vegetables; keep the surface damp and do not give up on the tray in week two.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to 20–30 cm apart, or one plant to a 10-inch pot.
- Sun and water: Full sun to light afternoon shade. Let the top two centimetres dry between waterings — far more herbs are killed by soggy soil than by drought.
- Harvest: leaves ready to pick from about 95 days, and every year after that from early spring. Pinch the growing tips regularly: it keeps the plant bushy and stops it running to flower.
- Keep it contained: Like all mints it spreads by runners. A large pot rather than an open bed keeps it where you want it.
- For tea: Pick before it flowers, when the oils are strongest. Dry in shade, never in direct sun.

Will this grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a pot of at least 12 inches (30 cm) with drainage holes, one plant per pot, in full sun. A balcony in Lahore or a rooftop in Karachi works well.
How many seeds are in the packet?
Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
