Geranium Seeds (Mixed Colours)

Buy geranium seeds online in Pakistan and grow the pot plant every balcony, rooftop and veranda in the country already wants. Geranium — botanically Pelargonium × hortorum — carries its flowers in tight domed heads above soft, scalloped, faintly scented leaves, and it holds those heads for months rather than weeks. One packet of seed gives you a dozen or more plants for less than the price of a single nursery-grown pot, which is the whole reason to grow it from seed.

This is a mixed-colour selection, so a single sowing gives you the full spread — the scarlets and true reds, the soft salmon and apricot shades, deep rose and magenta, and clean whites and blush pinks. Grouped together in pots along a wall or a stair, the effect is exactly what you see in the photograph.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Sow: August to October in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and the Punjab plains. July to September in Islamabad, Murree, Quetta and the northern hill areas. September to November in Karachi and coastal Sindh.
• How to sow: Fill a tray with a fine, moist seed mix, press the seed onto the surface and cover with no more than 3 mm of sieved compost. Geranium seed is large enough to space out by hand, so sow it individually rather than scattering.
• Warmth: Germination needs steady warmth of about 21–24°C. This is the single thing that decides whether geranium seed comes up. Do not sow into cold soil.
• Germination: 7 to 14 days. Keep the surface damp but never sodden.
• Transplanting: Move seedlings into their own pots at the three-to-four true leaf stage. A 6 to 8 inch pot suits one plant; a 12 inch pot takes three.
• Flowers: About 14 to 16 weeks from sowing. A September sowing in Lahore flowers from late December and carries on through to May.
• Height and spread: 30–45 cm tall with a similar spread. Compact enough for a windowsill, full enough to fill a large pot.
• Sun: Five to six hours of direct sun minimum. Geraniums flower in proportion to the light they get; in deep shade you will grow leaves and nothing else.
• Soil and water: Free-draining potting mix, and let the top inch dry out before watering again. More geraniums are killed by kindness than by neglect — wet roots are what causes yellow leaves and stem rot.
• Feeding: A balanced NPK 20-20-20 feed every two weeks once plants are established, switching to a high-potash feed such as NPK 5-15-45 as the first buds form.
• Deadheading: Snap the whole spent flower stalk off at its base rather than picking off individual florets. Done regularly it keeps new heads coming for months.
• Through the summer: In the plains, move pots into bright shade from May to August. The plant will stop flowering in the heat but survives, and comes back into bloom as the nights cool. In the hills it behaves as a true perennial and simply keeps going.

• Is this the same geranium sold as a plant in nurseries? Yes. This is the common bedding or pot geranium, Pelargonium × hortorum. Growing it from seed is slower than buying a rooted plant, but one packet gives you a dozen or more plants for a fraction of the cost.
• What colours will I get? A mix — scarlet, deep red, orange-red, salmon, apricot, rose pink, magenta, blush and white. Each seedling flowers in one colour, and you will not know which until it opens, which is much of the pleasure.
• How long from sowing to the first flower? Roughly 14 to 16 weeks. Geranium is slower from seed than marigold or petunia, so sow early and be patient — the plants then flower for far longer than either.
• Why has my seed not germinated? Almost always temperature. Geranium seed needs a steady 21–24°C to sprout. Sown into cold soil or a cold room it simply sits. Move the tray somewhere warm and bright and it will come.
• Do geraniums come back the following year? They are tender perennials, not annuals. In Lahore and the plains, carry the plant through the summer in shade and it flowers again the next season. In Murree, Quetta and the hills it grows on year after year.
• Can I grow them in pots on a balcony or rooftop? This is what geraniums are best at. They prefer a pot to open ground, tolerate the reflected heat of a rooftop better than most flowers, and need less water than their leafy look suggests.
• The leaves are turning yellow — what is wrong? Overwatering, nine times out of ten. Let the top inch of the mix dry out completely between waterings and make sure the pot actually drains. Yellowing lower leaves on an otherwise healthy plant can also simply be age.
• Do the flowers last as a cut flower? A cut head lasts four to six days in water. Geranium is grown mainly for the pot rather than the vase, but a few heads in a low bowl look very good.
• How should I store seed I do not sow? Fold the sachet closed and keep it somewhere cool, dry and dark. Stored properly the seed stays viable for the following season.
