Freesia Bulbs — Mixed Colours

Buy freesia bulbs online in Pakistan and grow the most strongly scented flower in the winter garden. Freesia corms produce arching sprays of waxy, funnel-shaped blooms on 30–45 cm stems, and a single vase of them will perfume an entire room. Planted in October or November, they flower from February through April, right when the rest of the garden is between seasons.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Plant: October to November in the Punjab plains; September to mid-October in Islamabad and Peshawar; November in Karachi.
• Depth and spacing: 5 cm deep, 8 cm apart, pointed end facing up.
• Flowers: February to April.
• Height: 30–45 cm. Stems may need light support in a windy spot.
• Sun and soil: Full sun to light afternoon shade, in free-draining soil. Add sand or perlite to heavy clay.
• Feeding: Balanced NPK 20-20-20 fortnightly once shoots appear, switching to a high-potash feed such as NPK 5-15-45 as buds form.

• When do freesias flower after planting? Roughly 100 to 120 days. An October planting in Lahore gives first flowers by mid-February.
• Which way up do I plant them? Pointed end up. If you truly cannot tell, plant the corm on its side and it will right itself.
• How long do the cut flowers last? Seven to ten days. Cut when the first bud on the spray has just opened and the rest will open in the vase.
• Can I grow them in pots? Yes, and it is a good way to keep the scent near a door or window. Use a pot at least eight inches deep with free drainage, five to seven corms per pot.
• Will they come back next year? Lift them once the foliage has yellowed, dry them off and store them cool. Left in wet summer ground in the plains they usually rot.
• Are these bulbs or seeds? These are living bulbs, corms or tubers — not seed. They flower in their first season, months sooner than the same plant grown from seed.
• How should I store them before planting? Somewhere cool, dry and dark with air around them. A paper bag in a cupboard is ideal; a sealed plastic bag is not, because trapped moisture causes rot.
