Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to March, or July to August, in the plains — the two classic maize seasons. Sweet corn needs warm soil and a frost-free run to harvest.
- Sowing: Sow direct 3 cm deep, 25 cm apart. Sow in a block, never a single row — corn is wind-pollinated, and four short rows side by side fill the cobs far better than one long row.
- Isolation: Keep sweet corn well away from field maize. Cross-pollination from ordinary makai turns the sweet kernels starchy in the same season.
- Soil and feeding: Rich, well-manured ground, with a nitrogen feed when the plants are knee-high.
- Water: Never short of water from tasselling through to filling. That is when the cob is made.
- Harvest: The silks turn brown and a punctured kernel runs milky rather than clear or doughy. Eat or chill it the same day — the sugars start turning to starch within hours.

Not really. Sweet corn is wind-pollinated and needs a block of plants to fill its cobs, so it belongs in open ground rather than a pot.
