A wide, shallow ceramic bowl moulded and glazed to look like a barrel cactus: ribbed columns, raised spine studs, a scalloped rim and two small cactus pads standing out on either side. The glaze is a deep bottle green that breaks lighter over the raised texture, so the whole piece catches light the way a real cactus does after rain.

Built for the Plants That Suit It

The shape is the point. Shallow and wide means a large surface area over a small depth of soil, which is exactly what cacti, succulents, haworthias, echeverias and sedums want. Their roots run sideways, not down, and a deep pot under them holds wet soil where no root ever reaches. That is how most succulents in Pakistan are actually lost: not to neglect, but to a pot that stays damp at the bottom for a fortnight.

Plant It as a Group, Not a Single

One succulent in the middle of this bowl looks lost. Three to five, planted close with their leaves almost touching, look deliberate. Mix heights: an upright euphorbia or small cereus in the centre, rosette echeverias around it, a trailing sedum spilling over the scalloped rim. Top-dress with grit, gravel or coarse sand once planted; it keeps the leaves off wet soil and finishes the piece properly.

Potting Mix and Watering

Use a free-draining mix, not ordinary garden soil: roughly half potting compost to half coarse sand or grit, with a handful of perlite if you have it. Water heavily but rarely. Soak until the mix is wet through, then leave it completely alone until it is dry right down. In a Lahore summer that may be every eight to ten days; from December to February it can be once a month or less. When in doubt with a succulent, do nothing.

Where to Put It

Bright light, and plenty of it: a sunny windowsill, a table near a glass door, or a shaded verandah that gets strong indirect light all day. Indoors in a dim corner the rosettes stretch and lose their shape within weeks. Outdoors in full Punjab summer sun, give it light afternoon shade, because glazed ceramic heats up and so does the soil in it.

If There Is No Drainage Hole

Put a 2 cm layer of gravel or broken crock at the base, plant into a free-draining mix above it, and water with a measured cup rather than a jug: enough to wet the soil, never enough to pool. Or keep the plants in their nursery pots inside the bowl and lift them out to water, which is the method we would suggest for anyone new to succulents.
