Grow your own red cabbage — deep purple-red heads of about 1.5 kg on a compact, early plant. Red Acre is the one to grow where space is short: it heads faster than most, stores well and holds its colour when cooked with a splash of vinegar. Shredded raw it makes the crunchiest slaw of the winter.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: August to October in the plains for a winter crop — this family only hearts up properly in cool weather. Hill stations sow March to June.
- Sowing: Sow in a nursery tray or seedbed 1 cm deep, then transplant when the seedlings have four or five true leaves, about four weeks on.
- Spacing: 45–60 cm each way. Crowded plants make small heads, and that is usually the whole reason a crop disappoints.
- Soil and feeding: Firm, rich, well-manured ground and a liquid feed every couple of weeks. This is a hungry crop.
- Water: Never let it dry out. Irregular watering is what splits a head just as it matures.
- Pests: Watch for aphids and cabbage caterpillar. Check the undersides of the leaves weekly and pick off by hand, or spray neem early in the season before numbers build.
