Grow your own Brussels sprouts — the dwarf heirloom that made the crop famous on Long Island in the 1890s. Compact plants of 50–60 cm carrying tight, sweet sprouts packed the whole length of the stem. It needs a long cool run, so sow in September for a February cutting in the Punjab; in Murree or Swat it does better still.

- When to sow: August to October in the plains for a winter crop — this family only hearts up properly in cool weather. Hill stations sow March to June.
- Sowing: Sow in a nursery tray or seedbed 1 cm deep, then transplant when the seedlings have four or five true leaves, about four weeks on.
- Spacing: 45–60 cm each way. Crowded plants make small heads, and that is usually the whole reason a crop disappoints.
- Soil and feeding: Firm, rich, well-manured ground and a liquid feed every couple of weeks. This is a hungry crop.
- Water: Never let it dry out. Irregular watering is what splits a head just as it matures.
- Pests: Watch for aphids and cabbage caterpillar. Check the undersides of the leaves weekly and pick off by hand, or spray neem early in the season before numbers build.

Yes, but use a deep, heavy pot of at least 16 inches (40 cm). The plants grow tall and a light pot blows over once they are loaded.

Enough for a home garden bed or a run of pots. Sow a few more than you need and keep the strongest seedlings.
