Begonia Seeds

Grow ever-blooming Begonias from these fine seeds (Begonia semperflorens). Waxy foliage and non-stop small blooms in pinks, reds and white, a shade-tolerant workhorse for Pakistani verandas, borders and pots that flowers for months once established.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Sowing time: September in the plains and Islamabad; October in Karachi. Begonia is slow, so sow early.
• Method: Nursery trays. The seed is dust-fine: mix with a pinch of dry sand, surface-sow, never cover, and water only from below. Cover the tray with clear plastic for humidity.
• Germination: 14–21 days at 22–25°C; sprouts are tiny at first, be patient.
• Transplanting: Prick out carefully at 3–4 leaves; plant 15–20 cm apart.
• Flowering: Around four months from sowing, then continuously through spring.
• Sun and water: Morning sun or bright shade; even moisture, good airflow.
