Grow your own Blue Lake pole beans — the American climbing bean that set the standard for flavour. Round, straight, completely stringless pods of about 15 cm, borne in clusters on vines that climb to 2 m and keep cropping for weeks. One short row on a net out-yields a whole bed of bush beans.

Growing guide for Pakistan
- When to sow: February to March, and again in August to September in the plains. Beans want warm soil and no frost — they will not germinate in cold, wet ground.
- Sowing: Sow direct 3 cm deep, seeds 8–10 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart. Soaking beforehand is unnecessary and can rot the seed.
- Soil and feeding: Any decent garden soil that drains. Beans fix their own nitrogen, so go easy on urea — too much gives you leaf instead of pods.
- Water: Steady moisture from flowering onwards. That is the stage where dryness costs you the crop.
- Heat: Above roughly 35 °C the flowers drop. Time the sowing so flowering falls before the peak of May, or after the worst of the monsoon heat has passed.
- Harvest: Pick while the pods snap cleanly and the seeds inside are still small, every two or three days. Keep picking and the plant keeps setting.

Yes, with support. A 14-inch (35 cm) pot and a bamboo tripod will carry a pole bean happily on a rooftop.
