Baby spinach for the salad bowl, not the karahi. Spinacia oleracea in an upright, compact hybrid with smooth, round, dark green leaves that are thick and heavy enough not to bruise — ready in 28 days. Its two selling points are slow bolting across both spring and summer slots, and unusually strong regrowth for a reliable second cut.

Growing Guide for Pakistan
- Sowing time: Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan) late September to February; Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar September to January; Karachi and coastal Sindh October to December; Murree, Swat and Quetta February to April. Fast enough to sow every two to three weeks right through winter.
- Method: Sow thickly for baby leaf — three to five seeds per 2 cm, rows 5 cm apart. For full size, 13 mm deep in rows 30–45 cm apart.
- Germination: Seven to fourteen days. Spinach germinates badly in soil above 30°C, so wait for cooler ground.
- Spacing: No thinning needed for baby leaf.
- Harvest: 28 days. Cut 2 cm above the crown and the bed refills for a second cut.
- Sun and water: Full sun. Water at the base, in the morning.
Bred for the second cut
Most spinach gives one good cutting and then straggles. Lizard was selected for vigorous regrowth, so a single sowing gives two full harvests. That roughly halves the seed you need for a winter of salad.
High downy mildew resistance
It carries high resistance to fifteen-plus races of downy mildew, the disease that ruins spinach in humid, still winter air — a real advantage in Karachi and in a sheltered Lahore courtyard.
