Anemone Bulbs — Mixed Colours

Buy anemone bulbs online in Pakistan for the longest flowering season of any winter bulb. Anemone coronaria produces wide, poppy-like blooms in jewel colours, each with a ring of dark stamens around an almost black centre. Starting in January and running through to April, they flower for longer than anything else in this range, and they hold that velvet centre right to the end.

Growing Guide for Pakistan

• Soak first: Three to four hours in room-temperature water before planting. The corms swell to nearly twice their size and sprout far more evenly. Plant the same day.
• Plant: October to November across the plains; November in Karachi.
• Depth and spacing: 5 cm deep, 15 cm apart.
• Which way up: Anemone corms have no obvious top. Plant them on their side and they will find their own way up.
• Flowers: January to April — the longest season in the range.
• Height and sun: 25–35 cm, in full sun with free-draining soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Do I really have to soak them? It makes a visible difference. Unsoaked corms come up slowly and unevenly; soaked ones are usually through the soil within two weeks.
• How long can I soak them for? Three to four hours. Beyond about six hours they take up too much water and are prone to rot.
• Are they good for cutting? Very. Cut when the bloom is half open and it will finish opening indoors, lasting six to eight days.
• Can they grow in pots? Yes. Eight-inch pots, five corms to a pot, with drainage holes and a gritty mix.
• Are these bulbs or seeds? These are living bulbs, corms or tubers — not seed. They flower in their first season, months sooner than the same plant grown from seed.
• How should I store them before planting? Somewhere cool, dry and dark with air around them. A paper bag in a cupboard is ideal; a sealed plastic bag is not, because trapped moisture causes rot.
